Minimize the Sounds of Silence with Custom-Loaded Blank Tapes

Our blank cassette page offers over 78 different shell colors, and your choice of cassette length! But what if you want to get very specific with how long your cassette should be per side? A little known secret is that you can request a specific custom-length in the ‘notes’ section of your order, that way your cassette isn’t swimming in empty space. In this email we’ll tell you how, along with important information you should keep in mind before ordering.

The Customer Notes section can be found in the checkout stage of your order. In the case of the image above, I want the cassette to be 23:30 per side. The length selector on the blank tapes product page can be changed by increments of minutes, so in this scenario I would be requesting a 48 minute tape (24 minutes per side.) With this customer note, the empty space on the cassette will be minimized. The time length per side should be based on the length of your longest master (i.e. if Side A is longer than Side B, base your length on Side A.)

Now, the following is important:

1) You should add 7 seconds of silence at both the beginning and end of each side.
This will eliminate the risk of audio being cut off by the leader or a cassette that’s simply not long enough. So when you’re calculating the length you need, add minimum 14 seconds.

2) Each cassette deck has a different playback or recording speed, and some are slower than others.
A variance of 1% won’t make a huge difference for a 5 minute tape, that’s about 3 seconds total, but it will make a big difference for a 60 minute tape (36 whole seconds!) That said, the longer the tape, the more extra time you should add. For those who want to venture inside your cassette deck and do some fine tuning, we sell speed calibration tapes in the online store, along with other maintenance tools to optimize your setup.

3) Don’t expect exact precision, don’t expect perfection.
Your calculations can be within the ballpark but there are too many variants to consider for a to-the-second result. Even our tape loader equipment, as well maintained and finely tuned as they are, are subject to slight variance. You should always estimate for more time rather than less. With exception of errors in manufacturing, our blank cassettes are final sale.

So if your cassette is just a bit over the minute increment and you don’t want 50+ seconds of silence at the end of each side, these are some steps you can take to minimize the empty space. From there, it’s up to you on how you’d like to fill up your tape!

VHS is Back and Better Than Ever!

VHS is Back and Better Than Ever!

Who can forget the feeling of walking through the video store, strolling from aisle to aisle, trying to find the perfect VHS tape to watch that night? Sure, streaming services offer us thousands of options, but gone is the ritual of popping in a physically tactile VHS, an object which gives a film respect and purpose not unlike what an audio cassette or vinyl does for music. At Duplication.ca you can get your film or video project duplicated on VHS with full packaging, thus giving your work the attention it deserves!

Modern VHS releases are a wonderful medium because they aren’t just limited to feature-length releases, but a whole gamut of audio/visual projects. Music video compilations, short films, vaporwave visuals, live gigs, just to name a few. As a filmmaker or a musician you can sell your work online or at the merch table at a screening or performance, rather than navigate the film festival or streaming distribution circuit.

Not only do our dubbed VHS tapes look excellent, our print and packaging are of superb quality. Printed cardboard sleeves are in full colour CMYK with your choice of digital or offset press. The sleeves snuggly fit the video cassette without being too tight or loose. You can even add glossy AQ coating for an additional fee if you want it to feel silky smooth and shine against the light.

Another packaging option are our clear plastic library cases, which contain an overlay film so you can add a printed wraparound sheet for artwork. Since the cases are clear, you can even request double-sided printing for extra artwork or notes! Sticker face labels and spine labels can be added to both the library cases and printed cardboard sleeves.

Cassette slipcase loading variations explained

Our printed slipcases are an excellent packaging method for box sets and multi-cassette releases. Cassettes fit snuggly inside, safe from accidentally slipping out when pulling the slipcase off the shelf. We have developed template variations for each slipcase, one in which the cassette is removed from the left of the slipcase and one from the right. Here’s a breakdown:

Left Loading

Portugal the Man cassette by Duplication.ca

This design is the one most often seen with multi-book slipcases. When looking at the slipcase over, the cassettes are removed from the left side. This way the front of the J-Card is seen immediately.

Right Loading

Christtt cassettes by Duplication.ca

With ‘right loading’ slipcases, everything is basically the opposite. When looking at the front slipcase cover the cassettes will be removed from the right-hand spine area. When you remove the closest cassette you will see the back of the top cassette. This design works best when paired with striking pad print or laser engraving designs on the tapes!

New color vinyl albums to package your cassettes!

Vinyl Albums for 1 Cassette Colors
Looking to add some flash to your cassette packaging? Maybe even give your next tape release the deluxe package treatment? You’re in luck– We’ve expanded our selection of Vinyl Albums for Cassette with four new funky colours!

These vinyl albums for cassette hold one tape, resembling classic audiobook packaging. They have an outerlayer film that allows for large trapsheet cover artwork. The size of these albums really makes your cassette stand out in comparison to the classic Norelco case packaging. Dimensions are 7 1/8″ x 4 5/8″ x 9/16″, so in height they’re somewhere in between a DVD and Blu-Ray case, but much shorter in width. They look awesome stacked in a bookshelf!

Inside you have a tray to securely place your audio cassette. There’s also space in the inside cover with enough room to house a booklet, liner notes, or other goodies like pins, patches, or stickers. You can go all out with this packaging! The album snaps closed like a DVD case, keeping all contents safe and secure.

In addition to these new colours we still have stock of the classic black or transparent Vinyl Albums for Cassette. Transparent albums allow for double-sided printing on your trapsheet, so you can maximize the artwork and design. These are available for purchase on our cassette duplication calculator for easy ordering. If you wish to combine cassette duplication with any of the colour vinyl albums, just mention it in the ‘notes’ section of your order, and we’ll modify the quote!

Audio cassette sticker label guide

Sticker labels are an excellent choice for audio cassettes if you want to show off a killer design in vivid colours. Something to keep in mind when graphic designing is that our stickers aren’t one size fits all, we actually have a few models to choose from. Some mesh better with certain cassette shells than others. Here’s an overview of our different cassette label templates to make your next cassette duplication order even easier!

STANDARD WHITE

These smooth labels have diagonal corners on the top with rounded corners on the bottom. In addition to the regular matte stock is a high gloss version which gives your colours an extra shine. Our 12-up sheets (which is to say 12 labels per page) allow for full bleed, so you can make your images extra large to ensure no artwork will be cut off at the printers.

SQUARE BOTTOM CORNERS

These are similar to the Standard White labels, but instead of rounded corners they have square corners at the bottom. These do not allow for full bleed, so if you’re not careful with your home printing you may find that some of the artwork at the bottom of the label may appear at the top due to a shaky printer. For this reason we suggest using solid colour backgrounds, like the Mothra Stewart tape above (great band name.)

We have a variety of Square Bottom Corner labels! All of them are available on the cassette duplication calculator:
Glossy White Square Bottom
Brown Kraft
Clear Labels
Solid Colour labels

Ezekiel Tha Prophet

FOUR ROUNDED CORNERS (CL4RC)

Pretty self-explanatory, all four of the corners are rounded! They’re printed on matte paper, giving a visceral texture to your cassette. The labels are full bleed, so you need not worry when designing your artwork!

Visit our website to download sticker label templates and get designing!

Which label is right for your cassette?

Chum Out

All you have to do is look at the cassette shell! For example, the Chum Out cassette above is using our ‘Old Computer’ shell, which has beveled style frame. The frame cuts diagonally on the top corners, meaning that you will want to use either our Standard White or Square Bottom Corner style labels.

CL4RC02 Concrete Coloured Paint

Meanwhile, our black cassette shells have rounded corners across the edges, so you’re safe to use the Four Rounded Corners sticker labels without worrying about overlap! Of course, you could use the Standard White labels with this style of shell as well, it’s just a matter of personal preference.

If you have questions about particular shells, don’t hesitate to send us an email, we want to make cassette duplication as smooth of an experience as possible for you. Make sure to check out the cassette selection guide for high-res pictures of our cassette shells.
